I qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 1991. My surgical training took me down to Birmingham, then to the Royal Free Hospital in London for research into bowel cancer, followed by several jobs around Kings College Hospital London. I also spent a year working abroad for Medecins sans Frontieres, which was a terrific experience. I came back to Edinburgh in 2002 and am glad to say that I never left again
I have been an NHS consultant at the Western General Hospital since 2005. I am a colorectal surgeon, but I do some general surgery too, such as hernia repair. Within colorectal surgery, I have a full spectrum of activity, but with a particular interest in functional bowel disorders. This encompasses treatment for faecal incontinence, constipation and prolapse. I work in Spire Shawfair Park's endoscopy suite which holds JAG accreditation.
I am one of the few practitioners of sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence in Scotland, a relatively new and very successful therapy. I also undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy/ colonoscopy. I am involved with a trial of preventative therapy for Crohn's disease, which I was instrumental in setting up.

I grew up in Stirling, and now live in the outskirts of Edinburgh. I am married with two children, who are just starting school and preschool, and one spaniel. I enjoy getting out into the outdoors, and especially hill walking and skiing. My other interests include swimming, reading, opera and taming an unruly vegetable plot. I spent some time in Africa and Asia working in my training, and I maintain links with Uganda in particular.
