Professional profile

I have been a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist for 20 years, having worked full-time in the NHS since 1990. I have held three consultant posts in Scotland, first in Argyll and the Islands, then NHS Tayside and latterly in NHS Lothian, from which I retired in 2018 and subsequently developed my private practice.

As well as my clinical work, I have been an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Universities of Glasgow and of Edinburgh, the Principal Investigator of several national research projects funded by the Scottish Government and twice chaired the SIGN guideline on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) (www.sign.ac.uk). In addition, I was Associate Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities, the leading international journal in this field.

Within my academic activity, I have published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in international textbooks and given numerous lectures, nationally and internationally.

Where necessary, I work with multi-disciplinary or multi-agency colleagues, whether statutory or private, to ensure optimal patient care.

In addition, I am available to see patients referred for expert opinion by instructing solicitors, advocates or barristers. I have provided many expert medico legal opinions for the Court, for both ‘sides’ of any case and have received Bond Solon training in expert witness practice. I also have a law degree from Cambridge University.

Clinical Interests

Child psychiatry

My area of special clinical interest is Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and I also offer wide experience in all aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry, including anxiety disorders (eg school refusal, selective mutism, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder), mood disorders (eg depression) and neurodevelopmental disorders (eg ASD, ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome). However, some inherently complex conditions, such as eating disorders, are best managed in specialist teams, usually via NHS CAMHS and I will divert such GP referrals accordingly.
