Specialises in

I am a Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the English Institute of Sport, with a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital in Sheffield.

I qualified from Newcastle University in 2006 before undertaking further training in a range of acute medical specialties around Manchester. Following a post-graduate degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, I completed higher specialist training in Sheffield between 2012 – 2017.

I then worked in elite sport and private practice before being appointed as an NHS Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2020. Throughout this period I gained invaluable experience in the management of musculoskeletal disorders and physical activity related injuries.

My role as a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of a relatively small number of jobs of its type in the country and the only one in South Yorkshire. Despite the job title, this is not just about looking after keen sportspeople, but any patient with an issue affecting their ability to be as active as they would like to be. I routinely manages a wide range of patients with complex musculoskeletal problems referred by GPs, physiotherapists and other consultants from various specialties.

Outside of the NHS, another key role involves working at the English Institute of Sport, treating injuries and illnesses in elite athletes from a wide range of Olympic and Paralympic sports, including being the Chief Medical Officer for British Wheelchair Basketball and team doctor to the GB Boxing squad. I am also the Head of Medical for Scotland Rugby League and the Chief Medical Officer to the UK School Games. I was previously club doctor for Leeds Rhinos and Sheffield Eagles RLFCs and still works as a match day doctor for Premiership rugby. A number of these roles have included attending major sports events and over the last decade I have been part of the medical team at two Olympic Games, a Paralympic Games, two Commonwealth Games, five World University Games, six World Championships and six European Championships.

I believe the principles of treatment and rehabilitation I apply to international and professional athletes are just as pertinent to all members of the public and aim to employ this holistic approach to care with all of my patients.
