Patients with private medical insurance generally require a referral letter before any insured patient can be seen by a consultant. Your patient needs to contact their insurer to make sure they are covered for their appointment to see their chosen consultant.

Self-funding patients can often be seen by a consultant without a GP/Healthcare Professional referral, although a letter is often preferred and may be a necessity for some specialties eg imaging and neurology.

Referrals for NHS patients must be sent through the online e-referral service (formerly choose and book) by visiting www.ebs.ncrs.nhs.uk. This is the best practice for us to receive NHS referrals, as patients will receive appointments in a timely manner and it is an efficient system.
