I have been a consultant cardiologist for 17 years with experience and specialist expertise in managing heart valve disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathies. I am an expert in the non-invasive investigation and management of coronary heart disease. I am highly specialist in adult congenital heart disease and maternal cardiac disease, involved in running the South Wales regional service. I specialise in general cardiology with specific interests in the investigation and management of heart valve disease, heart failure and specialist expertise in adult congenital heart disease. I am a subspecialty expert in echocardiography with a high national profile and international reputation; this includes leadership and teaching roles based on a high degree of experience and expertise in transthoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography.
Over a 17 year period in the NHS and Private Practice, I have performed over 5,000 transthoracic echocardiograms, 2,500 transoesophageal echocardiograms and 1,500 stress echocardiograms – one of the most experienced practices in the UK.
At Cardiff & Vale University Health Board I am currently: Clinical board director of specialist services; Lead in echocardiography information management & technology committee; Primary/secondary care taskforce representative for the national health wales informatics service: hospital e-referral system project; Board chairman/clinical lead for NHS Wales: neurological diseases national implementation board critically ill national implementation board; Major Trauma Network Clinical Reference Group.
In addition to my clinical work I have held numerous national leadership roles in cardiology and echocardiography, including: Regional Specialty Advisor (Cardiology), Royal College of Physicians (Wales) 2005-2011; Chairman, Specialty Training Committee (Cardiology), Wales College of Medicine 2005-2011; Council, Specialty Advisory Committee (Cardiology), Joint Royal Colleges Postgraduate Training Board, London 2008-2011; British Society of Echocardiography Council, 2001-2013; British Cardiovascular Society, Executive & Council 2009-2011; British Cardiovascular Society, Imaging Council 2009 - date; British Cardiovascular Society, Clinical Standards Committee 2010 - date; I am extremely proud to have been: President, British Society of Echocardiography 2009-2011; Chairman of Education & Training, British Society of Echocardiography 2006-2009.
I have an active role in teaching and training in echocardiography. In addition to delivering over 50 lectures at national conferences over the last 15 years, I am a regular faculty member of the following training courses and conferences: Hammersmith Echocardiography St Georges Hospital, London Transoesophageal Echocardiography Course Cardiff Transoesophageal Course I am honoured to be the only regular international faculty member of the Stellenbosch University Echocardiography conference (SUNecho), Cape Town I am extremely proud to be the Program Director of the Cardiff Echocardiography course, one of the longest running and most successful courses in the UK.

I am the Clinical Board Director of Specialist Services at Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, with senior clinical leadership responsibility for regional (adult), specialist services that are offered by CAV for patients across South Wales (2013-present).
I have held a number of leadership positions in cardiology at the University Hospital of Wales including Lead in Echocardiography (1999 - present), Lead Cardiologist (2009-11) and Clinical Director of Cardiac Services (2011-13).
