Professional profile

I am a Consultant in Nephrology and Acute General Medicine and perform my clinical duties at several locations within South-East Wales. Following qualification in 2004, I received training in numerous medical specialties in South Wales and Cambridge before entering the All-Wales Nephrology Higher Training Scheme in 2008. I completed my specialist training in 2016 in both Nephrology and Acute General Medicine. I am competent in all aspect of kidney disease.

My broad hands-on experience in other areas, including emergency and high-dependency settings, lends to expertise in acute general medicine. I also possess a strong background in medical education and research, having developed postgraduate courses and completing a PhD in Renal Pathophysiology at Bangor University. I continue to actively develop research interests and contribute regularly to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs at Cardiff University.

I specialise in Nephrology and I am happy to consult in all areas of renal disease including dialysis and transplantation. I hold accreditation in general medicine too and I am able to provide consultation in specialisms outside my own.

I have a particular interest in kidney disorders related to exercise and exertional heat injury. My PhD research focussed upon the effect of strenuous exertion upon kidney function and disease. My work is internationally recognised and I have published and presented my work in the USA, Far East and Europe.

I participate in multi-centre clinical studies, the most recent being the RISK study which I was Principle Investigator for in Cardiff. This study sought to identify risk factors for acute kidney injury in the medical emergency unit setting.

I am on the Team Doctor reserve list for Kingstone Press Rugby League 1. I have attended games for the Gloucestershire All Golds and South Wales Scorpions.

Personal Profile

I have young family and dedicate a lot of time and energy to them. When free time permits, I enjoy collecting, racing and restoring vintage remote control cars, keeping fit (running, martial arts) and the odd computer game.
