Professor Stephen McDonnell
Associate Professor & Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MBBS BSC MD MRCS FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics)
I am an Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge and Consultant Knee and Hip Surgeon working at Addenbrookes Hospital. I have been a consultant since 2013 having trained in centres of excellence within the UK and aboard.
I undertook my medical training at UCL in London and my surgical training in Oxford, based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. I have a strong research interest undertaking my thesis in into early knee arthritis. My research interests now are focused on acute knee injuries, advanced imaging, treatments, and best surgical outcomes.
I have a special interest and undertake many, partial unicompartmental knee replacements (sometimes called knee resurfacing) only replacing the damaged area of the knee, which have lower risks from surgery and can provide a superior functional outcome for patients.
My international training was with the MOG (Melbourne Orthopaedic Group) one of the largest specialist orthopaedic Groups in Australia. In 2018 I was awarded the British Association of Knee Surgeons Traveling Fellowship to New York and Boston to gain an international perspective.
My current practice is aimed at the management of sports injuries including ACL reconstructions and meniscal repair surgery, knee pain and arthritis with particular expertise in the management of early arthritis, knee replacement surgery specialising in both partial unicomartmental (knee resurfacing) and total knee replacements and the management of hip arthritis and hip replacements.
I believe that each patient should be prescribed a personalised package of care and treatment programme. I have a keen interest in sport and have been the match orthopaedic surgeon for first class rugby internationals, and have been a regular motor sport doctor at Silverstone for the Formula One British Grand Prix.
As an Associate Professor I am actively involved in research and education and lecture locally, nationally and internationally. I am a reviewer for the Bone and Joint Journal, The Knee and The British Journal of Sports and Exercise Medicine. I have developed the undergraduate orthopaedic curriculum, inspiring orthopaedic medical students to be orthopaedic surgeons of the future.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Stephen McDonnell at Spire include:
Partial unicompartmental knee replacement (knee resurfacing)
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital.
