Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Filippo Di Franco at Spire include:
I have been a consultant general surgeon for six years. My area of expertise is upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic (key hole) surgery. I perform the majority of my elective operations using a laparoscopic approach. This minimally invasive technique has the following advantages compared to open surgery: reduced postoperative pain shorter recovery time quicker return to work/hobbies. better cosmetic results I am also an accredited upper gastrointestinal endoscopist.
I specialise in upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery. I manage investigations and treatment for abdominal pain, gallstones (removal of gallbladder), hernias; groin hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical hernia, epigastric hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux and hiatus hernia and “lumps and bumps”.
To date I have performed over 800 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, 500 laparoscopic groin hernia repairs, 200 abdominal wall hernia repairs, 200 laparoscopic appendicectomies in both my NHS and private practice. My conversion rate from laparoscopic (key hole) to open surgery is very low. I have also performed over 1000 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies.
I am the Associate Medical Director of the Division of Surgery at Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust. I am responsible for the management of the Division of Surgery which includes five surgical directorates.
As part of my Associate Medical Director role at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, I led the Division of Surgery through the development of a new clinical governance structure. This has contributed to the development of safer patient’s services.
In addition to my clinical and managerial work, I am pro-actively involved with research. My thesis on “Perioperative immunonutrition in patients undergoing surgery for oesophago-gastric cancer” was awarded an MD (Doctor of Medicine) by the Newcastle University in 2010. I have also written some chapters for the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery ( Edition) and the Oxford Handbook of Operative Surgery (Edition).
