Miss Louise Allen

I have been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital for 21 years. Prior to this I completed my general ophthalmic training in rotations based in Southampton, Birmingham and Cambridge. I got a taster of life down under during a 6 month international ophthalmology exchange in Brisbane. I completed my sub-specialty paediatric ophthalmology training at Great Ormond Street Hospital. During my training I spent two years researching genetic eye disease and successfully completed an MD thesis on the subject.

I am primarily a paediatric ophthamologist and see and treat the full range of paediatric ocular and neuro-ophthalmological conditions, from the most common such as squint, lazy eye and sticky eyes, to rarer conditions such as congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity. In addition to my paediatric caseload I undertake general adult ophthalmic consultations and surgery including small incision cataract surgery.

I am registered with CASA and the CAA to perform Australian and British Aviation Ophthalmic Examinations. I am also registered with Tricare Overseas program and the Veteran's Administration to provide ocular examination and management for military personal and their families from the US.

I perform cataract surgery and laser treatment on infants at Addenbrooke's for the whole of the eastern region. I have performed over 3,000 adult cataract operation with a very low complication rate (National Ophthalmic database figures). I perform over 80 squint operations a year.

In addition to my clinical work I am very interested in innovation in Ophthalmology. I have recently developed a visual field test for use in young children and am working on a device to improve the screening and detection of congenital cataracts.
