Miss Hayser Medina-Lucena

Consultant Gynaecologist: Subspecialist Urogynaecologist

MBChB (Hons), MRCOG, MD

I am a Consultant Gynaecologist and a Subspecialist Urogynaecologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with my private practice at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, caring for women with pelvic floor dysfunction. I have particular expertise in pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and injuries following childbirth.

I assess and treat pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence (stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder), recurrent urinary tract infections and bladder pain. I offer both non-surgical and surgical treatments, including vaginal and laparoscopic surgery for prolapse (vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, anterior and posterior pelvic floor repair and sacrospinous fixation) and procedures for stress urinary incontinence (colposuspension, autologous fascial slings and urethral bulking agents), overactive bladder (cystoscopy and Botox injections into the bladder).

My NHS practice includes working closely with urologists, colorectal surgeons, radiologists, specialist nurses and physiotherapists. This multidisciplinary approach is particularly important when caring for women with complex pelvic floor problems, and allows treatment to be tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

I am the Gynaecology Risk Lead at Cambridge University Hospitals, with responsibility for the department’s monthly risk meeting and an active role in reviewing clinical incidents, identifying risks and supporting improvements in patient care.

I have a longstanding interest in leadership, education and improving urogynaecology services. I previously chaired the British Society of Urogynaecologists (BSUG) Trainee Committee, where I established a national webinar programme for trainees interested in urogynaecology. I am currently a member of the BSUG meetings committee which organises educational events, webinars and evidence-based annual scientific updates in collaboration with the RCOG.

I am actively involved in teaching and training doctors and other healthcare professionals, including being an educational supervisor for obstetrics and gynaecology registrars and a supervisor for medical students at the University of Cambridge.

I take a collaborative approach to care, giving patients time to discuss their concerns and understand the options available to them so that we can make treatment decisions together. I am fluent in Spanish and am happy to consult in either English or Spanish.
