Professional profile

I am a respiratory physician with more than 20 years experience as a consultant working in Cambridge and in London. I trained at UCH, the Brompton Hospital and at the Hammersmith Hospital, where I completed my MD thesis and an MRC Training Fellowship. I have authored numerous publications on respiratory medicine and physiology, winning first prize in the BMA ‘Book of the year’ competition for my book ‘Making sense of Lung Function’.

Previously, I was an examiner for both the University of Cambridge and the Royal College of Physicians and a medical director of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge from 2002-2008. I am currently Vice President of the British Lung Foundation. I was appointed OBE for services to medicine and healthcare in the New Year Honours 2009.
