Dr Michael O'Sullivan

Following undergraduate training at Cambridge University, I undertook postgraduate medical training at The Royal Brompton National Heart & Lung Hospital and the Oxford University Teaching Hospitals. I returned to Cambridge in 1996 and over the next seven years trained in all aspects of cardiology, with particular emphasis on interventional cardiology, at Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals. During this period, I was awarded a PhD, and the British Cardiac Society Young Research Worker’s Prize, for research into mechanisms of coronary stent failure. From 2003-2004, I worked in the Department of Interventional Cardiology at University of British Columbia.

Following my return, I was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals. My NHS practice is now based at Royal Papworth Hospital.

I provide secondary and tertiary centre care to patients with general cardiac problems (valve disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia), in addition to those with coronary disease. I have extensive experience in the invasive management of coronary artery disease (coronary angiography and coronary stent implantation) and in the minimally invasive treatment of aortic valve disease (transcatheter aortic valve intervention, TAVI).

I was Director of the Addenbrooke’s Cardiology Department from 2006 to 2014 and was the Clinical Lead for Coronary Intervention at Royal Papworth Hospital from 2017 until 2023. I was appointed Director of Cardiology at Royal Papworth Hospital in 2025.
