Professional profile

Dr Clunie has been qualified as a Rheumatologist since 1998. His thesis (MD) at University of London (awarded 1996) was in the field of Nuclear Medicine, MRI and Imaging as applied to inflammatory joint disease. He won regional Doctor of the Year award in for his work in establishing Fracture Liaison Services (see below). Dr Clunie is Clinical Lead for the NHSE Regional Rare Bone Disease Network.

Dr Clunie is a general Rheumatologt specialising in two distinct areas - bone disease (eg osteoporosis) and Spondyloarthritis conditions. He has led, and developed services in DXA in London (UCLH) and Ipswich Hospital (2003-12) and developed the need for Fracture Liaison Services (FLS; 2003-12) within The NHS, establishing the first English and second global FLS, a service which is now commonplace at every hospital (FLSs systematically identify people >50y at high risk of osteoporotic fractures for preventative treatment). Also, Dr Clunie has maintained a specialist clinical and research-active interest in the Spondyloarthritis (SpA) conditions (axial-SpA, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Inflammatory bowel related SpA). He set up the first dedicated SpA clinic at Addenbrooke's Hospital in 2017, having previously set up the first psoriatic arthritis clinic there in 2016.

Dr Clunie has run DXA units in three different hospitals and has set up one DXA unit from scratch (Ipswich 2003) and has reported thousands of DXA scans over the last 20 years. He has also - given his long experience in Rheumatology and general Musculoskeletal care- undertaken over 1000 injections of joints, tendons, bursae and entheses.

Dr Clunie is a trustee of The British Society of Rheumatology, is clinical lead for Rheumatology Governance at Addenbrooke's and is clinical lead for audit there across the whole Orthopaedic/Rheumatology and pain management departments. His previous roles include chair of the regional Rhuematology Training Committee, Regional Training Programme Director, Chair of BSR External Strategy Committee. He has worked as advisor to a number of charities including: The National Osteoporosis Society, ARMA, Bone Research Society.

Dr Clunie is active in clinical research and is author-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology - now in its 4th edition with previous editions being translated into many different languages. He was lead editor and author of the successful Textbook 'Osteoporosis', now in its 2nd edition. He has written chapters for major medical textbooks including: Davidson's and The Oxford Textbook of Medicine.

Personal Profile

Dr Clunie had a short career before medicine in professional tennis. He has active interests in many different sports and is a frustrated but persevering musician. He has two children.
