Dr Gavin Clunie

Consultant Rheumatologist and Metabolic Bone Physician

"Spire Cambridge Lea offers efficient and friendly services. Support for clinicians is extremely good; for doctors who specialise in musculoskeletal problems, this is an important aspect of their service to patients."

Specialises in

I have been qualified as a Rheumatologist since 1998. My thesis (MD) at University of London (awarded 1996) was in the field of nuclear medicine, MRI and imaging as applied to inflammatory joint disease. I won a regional Doctor of the Year award for my work in establishing Fracture Liaison Services (see below). I am Clinical Lead for the NHSE Regional Rare Bone Disease Network.

I am a general rheumatologist specialising in two distinct areas - bone disease (eg osteoporosis) and spondyloarthritis conditions. I have led, and developed services in DXA in London (UCLH) and Ipswich Hospital (2003-12) and developed the need for Fracture Liaison Services (FLS; 2003-12) within the NHS, establishing the first English and second global FLS, a service which is now commonplace at every hospital (FLSs systematically identify people more than 50y at high risk of osteoporotic fractures for preventative treatment). I have also maintained a specialist clinical and research-active interest in the spondyloarthritis (SpA) conditions (axial-SpA, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel related SpA). I set up the first dedicated SpA clinic at Addenbrooke's Hospital in 2017, having previously set up the first psoriatic arthritis clinic there in 2016.

I have run DXA units in three different hospitals and have set up one DXA unit from scratch (Ipswich 2003) and have reported thousands of DXA scans over the last 20 years. I have also - given my long experience in rheumatology and general musculoskeletal care - undertaken over 1,000 injections of joints, tendons, bursae and entheses.

I am clinical lead for Rheumatology Governance at Addenbrooke's and I'm the clinical lead for audit there across the whole orthopaedic/rheumatology and pain management departments. My previous roles include Chair of the regional Rhuematology Training Committee, Regional Training Programme Director and Trustee of British Society for Rheumatology. I have, an dcontinue to work as advisor to a number of charities including: The National Osteoporosis Society, ARMA, Bone Research Society.

I am active in clinical research and am author-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology - now in its fourth edition with previous editions being translated into many different languages. I was lead editor and author of the successful textbook 'Osteoporosis', now in its second edition. I have written chapters for major medical textbooks including: Davidson's and The Oxford Textbook of Medicine.
