Personal Profile

Nowadays I am mostly occupied in my professional work, and with staying up-to-date, but I have an amateur interest in archaeology and I also try to keep up some reading about genetics, which was my main interest in my research days. Sport: Sadly I was unable to emulate my father's football career (Aston Villa and Ireland): Club Rugby Union at a humble level: cricket at a good club standard (Ulster senior League) for Queens University 1st XI and later as club captain Belfast YMCACC 1st XI. Now regretfully retired, but I am a regular attender at Test matches. Although I am no longer politically active, as a student in Belfast and amid the worst of the civil unrest in Northern Ireland, I co-founded and edited a magazine covering non-violent and non-sectarian community politics. It achieved a circulation of several thousands and continued to appear for fifteen years. I was deeply involved in the Peace People movement, co-editing and writing for its magazine Peace by Peace which achieved circulation of 50,000 copies. In more recent years, my writing has been linked to my profession.
