DPhil, FRCS
Specialises in
I am a Consultant ENT Surgeon with experience in all disorders of the ear nose throat and neck, but with a special interest in otology (disease of the ear).
I treat a range of conditions, including hearing loss, tinnitus, glue ear, holes in the eardrum, and cholesteatoma. I currently run the regional ear implant service. At the end of my training I was awarded the TWJ Otology Fellowship as the top trainee in ear surgery in the UK. In my first year as a consultant I won an award for excellent patient care.
I have diverse academic interests in ear disease and global health. I was formally a Phizackerley Senior scholar at Balliol College Oxford where my DPhil was in genetic susceptibility to otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear). I now work on global ear disease, and have trained health workers in Cambodia, Nepal, South Africa, Fiji, Malawi, Zambia and Uganda. I am consultant to the WHO programme on prevention of deafness and hearing loss.
Finally, I work with national and international partners on environmental and labour rights harms in healthcare supply chains, and on this topic I am advisor to several government organisations.
My special clinical interests include: cholesteatoma, dizziness, ear discharge, grommets, hearing implants, hearing reconstruction (ossiculoplasty and stapedectomy), mastoidectomy (for cholesteatoma), repair of hole in the eardrum (tympanoplasty), tinnitus, wax.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Mahmood Bhutta at Spire include:
