Professional profile

I have worked at Southend University Hospital Foundation NHS Trust since 2000. I was appointed with a specialist interest in Uro-oncology, in addition to being fully trained as a general urologist. My interest in urological cancers has led to me undertaking further sub-specialist training. Together with my colleagues they now offer state-of-the-art treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancers.

Specialising specifically in kidney, adrenal and retroperitoneal cancers I undertake open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for these diseases, including complex kidney preserving surgery (partial nephrectomy -laparoscopic and open). The outcome of my surgical work were published in the individual surgeon outcomes programme in 2013 and compared most favourably with national figures and norms.

I led the formation of the regional prostate brachytherapy service, which treated its first patients in Dec. 2002. This service has expanded into a major UK centre for provision of prostate brachytherapy for both high and low risk patients, delivering both LDR (seeds) and HDR brachytherapy. The template biopsy service for the diagnosis of prostate cancer developed from the brachytherapy service and has progressed to the provision of cutting edge prostate cancer diagnostic pathways. These involve pre-biopsy MRI scans with subsequent targeted transperineal template guided biopsies, in appropriate patients. This exciting new development could lead to a revolution in the diagnosis and management of patients with prostate cancer, potentially increasing the number of patients who can be safely managed with surveillance, thus avoiding any of the complications associated with radical curative therapies. Having had experience of laser prostatic surgery during my training I was keen to continue this association. To this end I now perform Holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) of the prostate. This has resulted in shorter length of stay, decreased transfusion rates and less discomfort for patients undergoing prostatic surgery. Most patients are safely discharged within 24 to 36 hours of their surgery. My work in this respect was published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013. I champion the provision of multi-disciplinary, evidence based care to ensure that patients receive the highest possible management and treatments in a holistic and compassionate manner.
