Mr Garrick Georgeu

Consultant Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon

MB CHB, MSC in Surgical science, FRCS (PLAS)

Specialises in

I am a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, and work full-time in Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. I am highly regarded and a seasoned provider of Aesthetic Cosmetic Surgery and feel that I am extremely approachable and have a genuine drive and passion for my chosen profession. I provide a full range of cosmetic surgery and have developed a specialist interest and expertise in breast surgery, body contouring, facial surgery, as well as the increasingly popular “mummy makeovers”. During my training and into my consultant practice, I continue my medical education staying at the forefront of new research and developments in my field. I am an internationally invited speaker and am an author of many publications and some textbook chapters.

I am among the first of a new breed of young plastic surgeons to undergo formal specialist aesthetic surgical training and to receive an Aesthetic Surgical degree. I qualified at the University of Cape Town in 1993 before returning to the UK to begin my specialist plastic surgery training in 1995. I specialised in plastic surgery and trained exclusively from 1997-2007 at the following units: Queen Victoria Hospital (East Grinstead), Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Guys, Kings and St. Thomas’ Hospital (London), Broomfield Hospital (Chelmsford), and the West Midlands Specialist Plastic Surgery Registrar Rotation (Sandwell Hospital; City Hospital; Birmingham Children’s Hospital; University Hospital Birmingham).

During my 10 year training period I also completed a research degree (MSc in Surgical Science); wrote 24 clinical papers and two book chapters. I passed the FRCS (Plastics) exit examinations in 2006, followed by the official Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 2007. The CCST meant I could be officially registered on the General Medical Council’s specialist register for Plastic Surgery. In addition I completed a further 15 months training in highly regarded sub-specialist fellowships in Aesthetic, Breast and Microsurgery, and Trauma Reconstruction in London, Chelmsford and South Africa respectively.

Over eight years in private practice I have performed 2,500 different general and local anaesthetic procedures, on over 2,000 patients. The cases include the full breadth of cosmetic surgery including breast enlargement and all types of breast surgery, Brazilian tummy tucks, liposuction/lipo-sculpting, mummy makeovers and facial procedures.

I have held a position on the MAC for Plastic and Cosmetic surgery for a period of six years at two local Essex Hospitals and am a Visiting Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Anglia Ruskin University.

My Philosophy: Aesthetic surgery is non-life saving surgery and the decision to undergo any surgery should not to be taken lightly. I am a firm believer in the Patient Safety Diamond proposed by Professor Foad Nahai, who was the president of our international plastic surgery society ISAPS. In 2010 he proposed four factors that were required for safe aesthetic surgery:

  • Patient: a good candidate for the procedure
  • Procedure: appropriate for the patient
  • Surgeon: qualified and experienced in performing the procedure
  • Surgical setting: safe with trained personnel and emergency procedures in place

My Practice: To adhere to this philosophy of consistently safe surgery, the patient and I have to go through a set and standard processes prior to surgery, which includes

  1. Pre-consultation information - this involves Dianne my PA sending you the relevant patient information leaflets about the procedure you are considering. We will also tell you the cost of the consultation.
  2. The First consultation - this is where we meet for about 45 minutes where you can explain your concerns. After this comes a physical examination, and during this time I will make you aware of certain aspects of your anatomy. This is to point out things that you may not have noticed and which importantly may have an affect on the overall result. Often these are things that we cannot change such as the shape of your rib cage for example. I will then give you my opinion on what I think are your surgical options (there may be more than one), and then with the aid of a few diagrams explain the operation, the potential complications and anticipated recovery period. Later the same day I will send you a letter about this consultation. You may at this time request a quotation of the proposed surgery.
  3. Cooling off period - There will NEVER be a hard sell or pressure to get you to have any surgery in my practice. It is essential that you take time to consider the pros and cons of surgery - and if the surgeon(s) - are right for you.
  4. Second consultation - This is always offered and is FREE. It’s the opportunity for you to ask any questions about any aspect about the proposed operation.

At the end of this process, you the patient should have a better understanding of your anatomy, the way the operation is performed and the risks of surgery. I will provide you with additional information about your anticipated recovery, and show you links to patient pictures on my website and YouTube to watch videos of the surgery - only if you want. From the Surgeon’s part of the Safety Diamond, I believe that I have a broad range of surgical training experience, the technical ability and sound clinical judgement, thanks to a specialist plastic surgery training programme, followed by further sub-speciality training and then finally an extra Aesthetic Surgical degree.

I continue to read and travel extensively to learn the latest improved surgical techniques. The consistently best outcomes come from a full understanding of the patient’s needs, their anatomy, and then planning the correct surgical technique ie customise your individual care. I have and always will be honest about my ability, and what I feel I can achieve. If I do not think I can match your expectations or you are asking for something I cannot deliver, I will not operate on you. It's not safe and right to do so. Surgery, like life is a compromise, and sometimes we have to understand we cannot always get exactly what we like, and complications unfortunately even in the best hands do still occur. Finally, I only choose to operate in hospitals that have a proven track safety record and have trained personnel and emergency backup always in place.
