Inspirational Clinician Recognised for Outstanding Patient Care at Spire Washington Hospital

01 November 2025

  • George Morgan receives the prestigious IRIS Recognition Award at Spire Healthcare for his exceptional dedication, enabling early detection of serious neurological condition in his patient

A physiotherapist from Spire Washington Hospital, George Morgan, has been named a recipient of the prestigious IRIS Award (Inclusive Recognition of Inspirational Staff), in recognition of his exceptional dedication to patient care and clinical excellence.

The IRIS Award was created alongside the DAISY Awards to celebrate inspirational staff across Spire Healthcare who go above and beyond in their roles. With over 50 nominations received this quarter alone, George’s selection as one of just 12 national winners is a testament to the profound impact he has made.

George was nominated by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Daniel Dowen following his exemplary care of a patient recovering from a complex knee replacement. When the patient returned with unexpected symptoms, George’s clinical intuition and persistence led to the early identification of a serious neurological condition - Motor Neurone Disease (MND). His swift action enabled the patient to receive a timely diagnosis and begin planning for their future.

Mr Daniel Dowen, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Washington Hospital, said: “George went above and beyond what most would have done in these circumstances. His clinical judgment and ability to pick up on subtle signs led to a faster diagnosis and management. The patient and her family were incredibly grateful for his care, compassion, and determination.”

George’s nomination was supported by colleagues who praised his clinical reasoning, empathy, and unwavering commitment to patient wellbeing.

Richard Smith, Director of Clinical Services at Spire Washington Hospital, said: “MND is one of the most difficult neurological diagnoses to make. George’s swift and thorough approach made a life-changing difference for this patient. George exemplifies the values we hold dear at Spire - clinical excellence, compassion, and patient-centred care. We are incredibly proud to have him within our team.”

The IRIS Award is part of Spire Healthcare’s commitment to recognising and celebrating the outstanding contributions of its staff.

George Morgan, Physiotherapist at Spire Washington Hospital said: “I’m incredibly grateful to have been nominated for the IRIS award and truly honoured to have won it. It’s a privilege to support such a wide variety of patients each day here at Spire Washington Hospital. I take great pride in helping people make positive changes in their lives, whether that means returning to sports they love, getting back to work or simply walking their dog without pain. Receiving this award is a lovely recognition, and I’m committed to continuing to go above and beyond for my patients wherever possible”
