Virtual consultations:
I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee conditions, with a particular focus on joint replacement surgery. I regularly perform both hip and knee replacements and have a special interest in complex and revision procedures. These are operations carried out when a previous joint replacement is causing problems, such as loosening, wear or infection. I also carry out keyhole knee surgery and continue to treat a wide range of general orthopaedic trauma cases within my NHS practice.
I see patients with a broad range of painful hip and knee conditions. These include arthritis, bursitis and other degenerative joint problems, as well as musculoskeletal injuries such as meniscal tears. I also treat hip, groin and buttock pain, iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome, and a variety of tendon-related conditions around the hip and knee. In addition, I offer joint injections and assess sports injuries affecting these areas.
I have experience in managing more complex conditions, including avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip and Perthes disease. I also assess and treat patients with leg length differences, which are often linked to underlying hip problems.
I was born and educated in Durham City before going on to study medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, qualifying in 2005. I completed my surgical training in the North East of England and further developed my expertise during a year-long fellowship in lower limb joint replacement in Auckland, New Zealand.
Earlier in my career, I completed a higher degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Leeds in 2000. This provided a strong foundation in research, and I have since been a named author on over 20 publications. This background supports my commitment to evidence-based practice.
I currently have a busy NHS practice at Sunderland and South Tyneside NHS Trust, where I also serve as the clinical lead for the trauma orthopaedic department.
I believe in providing patient-centred care, taking time to listen and involve you in decisions about your treatment. I aim to be open and honest throughout your care, ensuring you feel informed, supported and confident at every stage of your journey.
