Mr Daniel Dowen
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
FRCS (Tr & Orth), MRCS, MBBS, BSc (Hons)
I specialise in hip and knee replacement surgery, with a special interest in complex and revision (re-do) surgery. I also perform keyhole knee surgery, and in my NHS practice regularly perform general orthopaedic trauma surgery.
I was born and educated in Durham City before I completed my medical training at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2005. My surgical training was also completed in the north east of England prior to undertaking a year long fellowship in lower limb joint replacement in Auckland, New Zealand.
I also hold a higher degree in biomedical sciences from the university of Leeds, which I completed in 2000. This has given me a strong grounding in medical research, and to date, I am a named author on over 20 publications. This has helped to form the basis of my evidence-based practice, and I am currently the research lead for trauma and orthopaedics at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Washington Hospital.
MB BS / University of Newcastle upon Tyne / 2005
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
MBBS is a degree given to doctors at the basis of their training.
FRCS / Royal College of Surgeons of England / 2014
Fellow of the Royal College Of Surgeons of England
I am the department lead for orthopaedic research at City Hospitals Sunderland.
Having been born and raised in Durham, and then completing most of my medical and surgical training in the north east, I am passionate about the area I live in.
I have a wife and two young children, who I enjoy spending my free time with, exploring Northumberland and the beautiful local coastline. I enjoy running and have completed five great north runs to date, for various charities. If I have any spare time, I enjoy a spot of fly fishing, and occasionally, kayak fishing during the warmer months - particularly as it allows me to explore new areas around the region.
