Specialises in
I am a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a specialist interest in head and neck skin oncology and cosmetic surgery. I qualified from the Royal Free University Hospital Medical School in London in 2002, and completed my training in a number of well-regarded plastic surgery units, including St George’s Hospital in London, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
I undertook my higher plastic surgical training in the Northern Deanery, including at the University Hospital of North Durham, where I now work as a substantive consultant. I also serve as the Trust’s Lead Clinician for Skin Cancer, reflecting my ongoing commitment to the diagnosis and management of skin cancers.
During my training, I was selected for the highly competitive National Training Interface Fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, where I was awarded the highest ranking trainee in my fellowship year. I have also expanded my experience through work in both NHS and private practice settings, including Spire, BMI and Nuffield hospitals in the North East, as well as private hospitals in London such as HCA at The Shard and London Bridge, and Weymouth Street Hospital. In addition, I have been a visiting fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
My practice covers a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, always with a strong focus on patient-centred care. I offer facial aesthetic surgery, including facelifts, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), prominent ear correction, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), neck lifts and brow lifts. I also specialise in cosmetic breast surgery, including breast augmentation, implant removal and replacement, breast reduction, uplift (mastopexy), and treatment for male gynaecomastia.
In addition to this, I provide body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and arm and thigh reduction. For patients who prefer non-surgical options, I offer treatments including anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers for areas such as the lips, cheeks, tear troughs and non-surgical rhinoplasty.
Alongside my cosmetic work, I maintain a strong interest and leadership role in skin cancer care. I am the Lead Clinician for Skin Cancer and Skin Specialist MDT for County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.
I am actively involved in training and supporting the next generation of surgeons. I contribute as a panel member for the Northern Deanery training ARCP panel, sit on the Surgical Training Committee for Plastic Surgery, and take part in the national selection interview panel for plastic surgery trainees.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Richard Chalmers at Spire include:
