Mr Nav Kara
Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon
MBChB, MRCS(Ed), DOHNS, FRCS(ORL-HNS), MClinRes
As the departmental Clinical Governance Lead, I maintain a strong focus on patient safety. I am a firm believer that this can only be achieved through open and honest communication with patients. I ensure that patients understand their condition and the proposed treatment options available to them, and find that patients who are better informed throughout the process tend to experience better surgical outcomes.
I graduated from the University of Aberdeen and undertook my further training across Scotland and the North of England. I have been practicing in ENT since 2005, and my NHS practice is based at Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. I have a subspecialty interest in Rhinology and am the lead for my department, dealing with allergies, complex sinus surgery, nasal polyps, nasal blockage/deformity due to trauma and deviated nasal septums. I also conduct dedicated Paediatric clinics, focusing predominantly on common childhood problems such as hearing loss, tonsillitis and obstructive breathing (OSA).
I am a regular faculty member on National Courses in Septorhinoplasty/Facial Plastics and Endonasal Sinus Surgery. I am the joint founder of a charity which provides National ENT Training to junior doctors and nurses. I teach on the regional junior doctor surgical training days and am also regularly involved in teaching trainees, medical students and work experience students in my day to day NHS practice.
I have a keen interest in Research, and am the Research Lead in my Department. I am the Principal Investigator on a number of collaborative National Clinical Trials and also a co-applicant on a large National Grant Award. I regularly publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
I offer clinic consultations for children at Spire Washington Hospital. If surgery is proposed, then this is conducted at their local NHS Hospital.
