Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon, with my NHS practice based at University Hospital North Durham and my private practice at Spire Washington Hospital. Within my NHS role, I serve as the Trust Cancer Lead for County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust, and at Spire Washington I am a member of the Medical Advisory Council.
My clinical practice covers the full range of general and colorectal surgery. I routinely use advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive techniques, including trans-anal approaches where appropriate. This includes procedures such as hernia and gallbladder surgery, as well as the investigation and treatment of bowel-related conditions, colorectal and anorectal disorders, and colorectal cancer. I also perform endoscopic procedures, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD) and lower gastrointestinal investigations such as colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy.
I have a particular interest in abdominal wall reconstruction, bowel cancer, and coloproctology, which focuses on conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus.
I qualified in medicine from the University of Birmingham. I completed my basic surgical training in the West Midlands and the South West, before undertaking higher surgical training in the North East of England. During this time, I gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was awarded a Master of Surgery degree with merit.
Towards the end of my training, I was honoured to receive the ACPGBI travelling fellowship. This gave me the opportunity to work in the world’s largest intestinal failure unit in Nebraska, USA, where I managed highly complex bowel conditions.
Following my training, I completed a further fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, focusing on advanced laparoscopic techniques and complex colorectal cancer surgery. I then took up my current consultant position at University Hospital North Durham.
I have published work in a number of peer-reviewed journals. More recently, I have been closely involved in the development of a state-of-the-art laparoscopic operating theatre at University Hospital North Durham.
My aim is to provide clear, supportive and high-quality care for every patient I see. I combine my experience in complex colorectal surgery with minimally invasive techniques wherever possible, helping to support safe and effective treatment tailored to each individual.
