Dr Paul Wilkinson

I have completed subspecialist training in pain management to standards approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, alongside additional overseas training. My practice combines medical treatments, minimally invasive procedures and multidisciplinary pain management approaches to help patients manage complex and persistent pain conditions.

I am Lead for the acute pain service at the Royal Victoria and Newcastle General Hospitals and was appointed Medical Director of the Newcastle Pain Management Programme, an initiative developed to support patients with challenging pain conditions and explore earlier intervention strategies where appropriate.

My clinical practice includes advanced pain treatments such as stimulation analgesia, specialist medication management and a broad range of invasive pain procedures. These include sympathetic nerve blocks for neuropathic and spinal pain, facet joint injections, radiofrequency treatments, transforaminal, sacral and epidural injections, adhesiolysis procedures for back pain, as well as trigger point acupuncture and injections. I also support patients through wider pain management strategies including pain education, behavioural approaches and coping techniques designed to improve quality of life and long-term symptom management.

My main NHS role is based at the Newcastle Pain Management Unit, a longstanding tertiary referral centre where the majority of my clinical practice is dedicated to pain management.

Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in education and research as a regional subspecialist pain training coordinator, tutor and regular lecturer. I also hold a research grant focused on neurophysiological mechanisms related to pain management.

My approach is centred on providing compassionate, personalised care and helping patients better understand and manage their pain through evidence-based treatment plans tailored to their individual needs.
