Professional profile

I was born in the North East of England and graduated from Leeds University Medical School in 1999 and have worked as a Sports Medicine Doctor within professional sport since 2002.

I was appointed as the first full time sports medicine doctor at Sunderland AFC by Roy Keane in 2008 as Head of the Medical Department / Club Doctor. I resigned from this role in May 2013 in order to pursue other opportunities. I was then appointed by the FA as Mens’ England U20 Team Doctor and was proud to be part of the World Cup winning backroom team at the 2017 U20 FIFA World Cup in South Korea in 2017. I currently work with professional jockeys at Newcastle Racecourse and as Team Doctor at Durham County Cricket Club. Following the World Cup I returned to Sunderland AFC during the preseason of 2017/18 season as Director of Medicine and Performance to oversee the Medical and Sport Science Departments at the club.

Whilst working regularly with elite athletes I am equally comfortable working with amateur and non-sporting patients suffering from musculoskeletal problems. I have a passion to help like-minded and passionate, amateur sportsmen and women return to their chosen sport as quickly and safely as possible. I work within the NHS as a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine and am the Musculosketal Medicine Clinical Lead in Sunderland where I consult with adults of all ages suffering from a wide range of joint and soft tissue problems effecting both their general mobility and exercise.

I have lectured at a range of national and international conferences whilst also being actively involved in the training of junior doctors in the northern region and am heavily involved in research within the field of Sports Medicine and Musculoskeletal Medicine with local and national Universities.
