Professional profile

I am a sports physician within Spire Washington hospital having worked within professional football for the last 13 years. I was born in the North east of England and qualified from Leeds University Medical School in 1999.

I pursued a career in sport medicine by carrying out a wide range of surgical jobs and gaining my MRCGP qualification as a general practitioner in 2005. I worked for York City FC before moving back to the North East to undertake the role as reserve team doctor for Sunderland AFC. I gained a distinction in my Sports and Exercise Diploma from the University of Bath and later completed my masters qualification during which I carried out research into the incidence of low vitamin D levels within premier league footballers.

I was appointed as the first full time sports medicine doctor at Sunderland AFC in 2008 where I accepted a positon on the executive management team and Head of the Medical Department until resigning in May 2013 in order to pursue other opportunities. I was appointed team doctor for the England football U19 squad after leaving SAFC and the following year moved to work with the newly formed England U20 squad with whom I am still actively involved as their team doctor. I work with other elite athletes at Newcastle Racecourse and at Durham Cricket Club. I regularly work with elite athletes but am equally comfortable working with non-sporting patients suffering from musculoskeletal problems within my Sports Medicine clinic, Sports Medicine NE. The clinic was developed in an attempt to help passionate, amateur sportsmen and women return to their chosen sport as quickly and safely as possible. My expertise within sports medicine and musculoskeletal medicine resulted in my appointment as a clinical lead within the NHS Musculoskeletal Community Assessment and Treatment Service at South Tyneside Foundation Trust where I consult with adults of all ages suffering from a wide range of joint, tendon and muscle problems.

I have lectured at a range of national and international conferences whilst also being actively involved in the training of junior doctors in the Northern region. I am a part time Teaching Fellow at the University of Bath Sports and Exercise Medicine MSc course and heavily involved in research within the field of Sports Medicine and musculoskeletal medicine with local Universities.
