Professional profile

I am the senior Hand Surgeon in Wessex. with my NHS practice based at the regional teaching hospital University Hospital Southampton. As a Professor, I have the opportunity to teach, research, write and attend postgraduate meetings which give unrivalled opportunities to remain informed and current. I hold the European Diploma of Hand Surgery which is the highest European qualification available in Hand Surgery. I have written dozens of research papers and book chapters and learned articles on hand surgery. My teaching, research, and international reputation were rewarded by the University of Southampton with an Honorary Professorship in 2013. My NHS contribution has been rewarded with a Bronze Clinical Excellence award. I am Surgeon to Southampton Football Club and have looked after many elite athletes. My Hand Clinic is based on constant technical practice, education and reflection to ensure I can provide the most up-to date, safe and appropriate care.

I am specialised in Hand and Wrist conditions. I have particular experience in Dupuytren's disease (to include Xiapex), arthritis, sports injuries, wrist joint problems and nerve problems (carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel and rarer conditions) . Please see the websites www.handsurgery.co.uk and www.collagenase .co.uk.

When you come to my Hand Clinic, I will do my best to diagnose your problem, learn about what you want and help you decide what is best for you. I will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each potential treatment. Although surgical treatment might be needed, wherever possible we try safe and simple non-operative treatments such as therapy and injections.

I have a very large surgical experience over 18 years of Consultant practice. Nevertheless, I will always consider and discuss non-surgical options with my patients.

In addition to my clinical work, I hold several national and international roles to include Executive Committee, International Federation for Societies for Surgery of the Hand; Member, British Orthopaedic Association Medicolegal Committee; Member, British Orthopaedic Association Education Committee; Honorary Secretary, British Society for Surgery of the Hand (2013-2016). I ma on the Editorial Boards of the Bone and Joint Journal, Journal of Hand Surgery, Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons and Italian Hand Journal.

A hand surgeon is someone who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the fingers, hands, wrists and forearm. They will have been trained initially in orthopaedic or plastic surgery and should then have undertaken additional training focussing on the hand wrist and forearm. When someone has a hand or wrist or forearm problem and needs treatment, there are some to consider when choosing whom to consult. . Is your surgeon specially trained in hand surgery? • Does your surgeon have a post-graduate subspecialty qualification to validate the term “Hand Surgeon” such as the European Diploma of Hand Surgery? • Does your surgeon spend all of his or her practice treating disorders of the fingers, hand and wrists without distraction from other orthopaedic regions?
