Miss Joanna Thomas
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MBBS, MSc, FRCS (Trauma & Orth)
"The facilities at Spire Southampton are outstanding. Each and every patient is afforded the highest level of quality care."
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in sports injuries, general paediatric orthopaedics and paediatric trauma. My passion is in soft tissue knee injuries; ACL injuries, dislocating patellae, and shoulder injuries including dislocating shoulders and cuff tears. Especially those injuries that occur in growing children as well as young adults. I treat under 18 footballers, rugby players as well as other athletes so I appreciate the need for the multidisciplinary approach with expert physiotherapy as well as orthopaedic care and the importance of the psychological aspect of achieving a quick return to play.
I trained in London and completed my fellowship at Southampton University Hospital. The majority of my elective work is knee and shoulder arthroscopies (keyhole surgery), ligament reconstructions (in the knee and shoulder) especially those in growing children and adolescents as well as young adults. I also specialise in instability of the shoulder and knee cap and perform specialist procedures, for example: ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MPFL reconstructions - in children and young adults. Trochleoplasty (reshaping the patellofemoral joint). Meniscopexy (a treatment for the discoid meniscus). Osteochondral defects in the knee Patella (knee cap dislocations). Shoulder stabilisation.
I am on the faculty of the first British Paediatric Soft Tissue Knee Symposium. In addition to my work I am fellowship director for Paediatric Orthopaedic fellows at Southampton University Hospital, I am involved in teaching our trainees and a lecture around the country and abroad on paediatric and young adult sports injuries.
