Major Spire hospital refurbishment to benefit Portsmouth

07 November 2022

Spire Portsmouth Hospital has begun a major £6.4m refurbishment project to increase its patient services through the expansion of existing patient day care facilities and the development of a new walk-in unit.

This project will increase the hospital’s capacity, helping treat up to 1,750 additional NHS and private patients a year. Through a mix of inpatient, day care and walk-in services, this increases patient choice and in turn will help to address waiting lists in and around Portsmouth.

The project will also upgrade many of the facilities at the hospital to make them brighter, better and more comfortable for patients.

Phase one of the 14-month project will see significant investment in the latest operating theatre technology to deliver better care to patients; while phase two, which commences in January 2023, will entail the refurbishment of the X-ray department, expansion of the patient day care facilities and the building of the new walk-in unit.

Expansion of the daycare facility increases the hospital’s capacity to deliver short stay care, while the walk-in unit will provide people with access to quick orthopaedic, ophthalmology, gynaecology and urology treatment without the need for theatres or an anaesthetic.

Kevin Griffiths, Hospital Director at Spire Portsmouth Hospital, said: "The new care facilities and expanded theatre capacity here in Portsmouth will benefit patients and colleagues, and help us maintain the high standards in healthcare that patients have come to expect from Spire hospitals.

“While much of the new equipment such as camera stacks and anaesthetic machines go unseen, they are vital to delivering a safe and high quality experience for our patients.

“We’re all incredibly proud of the “Good” CQC rating we currently hold, and this investment underlines Spire Healthcare’s confidence and commitment to expanding and improving its hospital facilities.

“This development will be a boost to the healthcare facilities available in the Portsmouth area and will continue to help us alleviate pressure on waiting lists.”
