A wealth of knowledge with Sian Hayes

Meet the team: Sian Hayes pre-assessment sister

I originally trained in Exeter, initially with my orthopaedic nurse training at the age of 17 and then my general nurse training. On completion of my nursing training, I joined the Royal Navy Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, where I spent three years.

I joined Spire Portsmouth, or the BUPA hospital as it was known then, straight from the Royal Navy in 1989 and have held various roles including Ward Sister, Clinical Nurse Manager, Business Development Manager and Matron.

My current role as the Pre-assessment Sister works in conjunction with a team of nurses to ensure patients are fit and safe for elective surgery. Its imperative that we know our patients past medical history, any medication they take, or preferences they have as individuals.

Our team has to work closely and effectively with our consultants and all other departments within the hospital. During pre-assessment we see patients face to face for up to an hour to do the following:

  • Take a detailed past medical history
  • Take blood
  • A trace of the heart
  • Swabs to exclude MRSA
  • Explain what is going to happen before, during and after surgery
  • Prepare patients for discharge

I have an exceptional team who make coming to work every day a joy, the hospital is a great place to work and all the teams work so well together. Outside of work I enjoy music festivals and travelling in my campervan!
