Mr Philip Sauvé

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

MB BS, MRCSEd, FRCSEd(Tr&Orth)

Specialises in

I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a clinical practice dedicated to treating patients with problems of the hand and wrist. My clinical interest is in wrist injuries and in particular keyhole surgery of the wrist. I undertake all aspects of hand and wrist surgery.

I am also an NHS Consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. There I combine a busy elective hand and wrist surgery practice with general orthopaedic trauma and I'm part of the on call rota at Queen Alexandra Hospital.

I graduated as a doctor from Imperial College, School of Medicine at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London in 1998. From there I undertook general trauma and orthopaedic surgery training in Hampshire and Dorset and specialist hand fellowship training at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London and then an Advanced Training Post (ATP) at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Derby.

During my training I was awarded the Educational Prize and a Travelling Fellowship by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). I visited clinics in Paris, Lyon and Reims, France on a wrist arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) traveling fellowship arranged by the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (EWAS). I also work closely with the hand therapy team. The hand therapists provide advice to patients on the day to day management of various hand conditions or injuries and guide patients through their postoperative rehabilitation. They also fabricate thermoplastic splints in the hand therapy clinic. I can refer you to the hand therapy team following a clinic consultation or surgery.

I use clinical outcome scoring systems to monitor patients’ conditions and progress. These help to measure the quality of the treatment that I provide. In the lead up to your operation you may be asked to complete a questionnaire, and you will be asked to complete subsequent questionnaires at various time intervals following your treatment - I will be happy to guide you through this process. Committed to clinical excellence, I hope that the information collected will help to maintain the high standards of care for my patients. I have a strong clinical research interest, and my projects have been presented nationally and internationally at specialist orthopaedic and hand society meetings. This research has also been published in international peer review journals.

As well as teaching the next generation of Orthopaedic surgeons locally, I have taught on national courses at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby and at the Royal College of Surgeons in London.

Personal profile

Having represented my country at schoolboy rugby and played semi-professional rugby while a medical student, it was inevitable that I fulfilled the medical stereotype and became an orthopaedic surgeon. Now that my rugby playing days are over, I spend time with my wife and family encouraging my children in their own sporting activities. As an orthopaedic surgeon, my problem is that I am no good at golf.
