Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Gunther Selzer at Spire include:
I have been a consultant for 10 years working at Spire Little Aston Hospital and Walsall Manor Hospital. I qualified from the University of Kiel in Germany in 1990 and then came to England nearly 25 years ago. Having completed all my basic surgical training including the FRCS exams in the UK, I then was appointed to the 6 year Specialist Training Programme in the West Midlands. This has enabled me to work at a variety of hospitals in the region including both teaching and district general hospitals. I finished my training and obtained the certificate of completion of surgical training (CCST) in 2005.
To advance my training I undertook a specialist fellowship in hip, knee and revision surgery in Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital in London. During all this time I also completed an MSc in orthopaedic engineering and a dissertation.
Next to general orthopaedics I specialize in hip and knee replacement surgery as well as arthroscopic surgery. I also operate in the more complex field of revision surgery hips and knees, as well as computer navigated surgery.
My main interest is in lower limb orthopaedic surgery. I perform knee arthroscopies, meniscectomies, meniscal repairs, microfracture and cartilage treatments for the knee. My other main interests are joint replacements of the hip and the knee including revisions and computer navigated surgery. Further I operate on minor hand and foot cases such as Dupytren’s, trigger finger, carpal tunnel decompression bunionectomies and toe fusions.
I have performed a large number (more than 1000) total hip and knee replacements including revisions. Equally I have performed knee arthroscopies, minor foot and hand surgery as well as most aspects of trauma surgery.
I am a clinical supervisor for junior doctors and mentor for medical students. I am an examiner for Birmingham Medical School. For many years I was the clinical audit lead in our hospital. I am the lead and have been working relentlessly for the care of fracture neck of femur patients, having developed a care pathway. I also am now the trauma lead in our department.

I am married and have a daughter. My wife is a local GP originally from Spain. We enjoy holidays abroad and going back home to family in Germany and Spain as well as visiting other countries to experience different cultures. One of our highlights recently was swimming with dolphins. I enjoy running, cycling, skiing, travel photography and playing the cello in my free time.Back to top
