I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital and the John Goligher Colorectal Unit at St James's University Hospital, Leeds. I am passionate about bowel disease and the need to encourage people to feel comfortable about seeking help and talking about their bowel health and concerns. I have a particular interest in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoids, fistula, fissure and all proctology and benign colorectal disease. I also carry out general surgery operations such as skin lesion removal, in-growing toenail excision and hernia repairs.
I undertook my surgical training throughout Yorkshire and was awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons Consultant Surgeon Examination. I followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectal surgery at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During my training I also undertook a PhD in nanobiotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system for minimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiple publications and prizes. I helped lead a national trial into surgical treatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which I won the BJS Best Paper prize at the European Society of Coloproctology in Milan.
I am the Chair of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland Research and Audit Committee, and Surgical lead for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network.
