38 year old Childline Practitioner Hayley Dunlop from Porthcawl has experienced symptoms of endometriosis since the age of fourteen. Thirteen years later, Hayley was diagnosed with the condition, but continued to struggle despite undergoing two previous surgeries.
“It got to a point before my last surgery where I could no longer sit down at work. I ended up having to go on sick leave for a month before my surgery as it was impossible to work,” Hayley explains.
Endometriosis is a condition that affects a large cohort of people. According to leading charity Endometriosis UK, the condition affects 10% of women world-wide. Diagnosing endometriosis can also be a difficult journey for many, averaging 8 years and 10 months from an individual seeing the GP about their symptoms to getting a diagnosis.
Determined to find further support, Hayley began researching consultants who could do more to help her and was recommended Mr Anthony Griffiths. Hayley describes her first consultation with Mr Griffiths as a turning point.
Hayley was offered an ultrasound to double check her diagnosis. “I already had the endometriosis diagnosis before my consultation with Mr Griffiths, but I had an ultrasound to confirm where it was. I was also diagnosed with pelvic congestion syndrome, which I had not known about previously.”
Six weeks after her first consultation, Hayley underwent surgery. Mr Griffiths explains:
“Hayley had extensive deep endometriosis, and complete excision was carried out. The pelvic anatomy was restored to normality at the end of the procedure.”
Following surgery, Hayley was prescribed medication to help prevent the endometriosis from growing back rapidly.
For Mr Griffiths, helping people like Hayley is more than a profession—it’s a purpose. He tells us, “My goal is to provide clear answers, effective treatment, and renewed hope. It is deeply rewarding to see patients regain their health and fertility after living with chronic pain for years.”
Reflecting on her experience, Hayley says: “After my first consultation I left with happy tears. I felt listened to, heard and supported for the very first time in my life.”
