Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Marcellino Maheson at Spire include:
Primary and revision hip replacement surgery, micro hip replacement, computer guided surgery, minimally invasive surgery and hip arthroscopy.
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the University Hospitals in Cardiff. I was appointed over 20 years ago with the intention of providing a comprehensive specialist orthopaedic service in adult hip surgery. My clinical practice is divided between the University Hospitals Cardiff for NHS patients and the Spire Hospital Cardiff for private patients. My private practice centres on the management of adult hip conditions including joint replacement arthroscopy and revision surgery. I have been involved in a number of innovative developments over the years including computer guided hip surgery, micro hip replacements and minimally invasive anterior hip replacement surgery.
The minimally invasive hip replacement that I have championed in my practice is a pioneering operation which increases patient recovery speed. It was recognised at the prestigious Laing Buisson Independent Awards in November 2015 where it won the Medical Practice Award. Anterior hip replacement surgery is combined in my practice with an enhanced recovery after surgery programme (ERAS) allowing patients to be discharged home in less than 48 hours after surgery and reducing rehabilitation time by approximately half of conventional hip surgery approaches. This procedure is extremely sought after due to the fast and safe rehabilitation and recovery time compared with conventional approaches.
To date I have performed over 3000 posterior hip replacements, 200 anterior hip replacements and carried out over 200 arthroscopic procedures. In addition I have carried out over 2000 revision hip replacements.
