I was educated at Jesus College, Oxford and Oxford University Clinical Medical School, qualifying in Medicine in 1979. I then trained in General and Thoracic Medicine at Oxford, Birmingham and Cardiff, clinical and laboratory research into primary immunodeficiency disorders and HIV biology at Edinburgh and at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC, and clinical and laboratory Immunology at Birmingham. I have been a Consultant Clinical Immunologist in Cardiff since 1995. From 1995-2005 I singlehandedly ran the Clinical Services in Clinical Immunology, Immunodeficiency and Clinical Allergy and established the National Immunology Laboratory for Wales where all the relevant laboratory tests for these disorders are performed. Following the appointment of two consultant colleagues in 2005 and 2009 I have been the lead for the Clinical Allergy Service in Wales, sharing other responsibilities.
I specialise in the diagnosis in adults of all allergy-related disorders, particularly urticaria (rash, hives, weals), angioedema (swellings), food-related symptoms, rhinitis and anaphylaxis.
I was a member of the Department of Health’s National Allergy Advisory Group in 2005/6 and of the Strategy group of the ensuing Allergy Skills for Health group in 2007/8. I chaired the UK National Quality Assurance Advisory Panels in Immunology (which oversees quality assurance of Immunology tests) from 2004 to 2008 and was a member of the Immunology panel of the National Pathology Benchmarking service from 2007 to 2010. These professional roles, and those I have taken on since 2010 have ensured that all aspects of my clinical practice are as current, thorough and forward-looking as feasibly possible.

I am an unwilling but proud gardener, with a keen interest in lawn care. I engage heavily in the B&Q bargain counter and have many infrequently used tools, but will be ready for all sorts of tests when they come! I listen to all kinds of music (classical, opera, jazz, folk and rock) on my iPOD while gardening, and am very keen on the Welsh National Opera. I like travelling and also skiing when my family permit such holidays.
