Forty-five-year-old IT Implementation Specialist Paul Remmington suffered from chronic sinusitis and had a diminished sense of smell for 12 years before seeking further advice. After nearly 10 years of using nasal sprays and being unable to have surgery through the NHS, Paul sought further help with Spire Healthcare using his BUPA private medical insurance.
After a speedy referral to Spire Bristol Hospital, Consultant Rhinologist, ENT and Skull Base Surgeon Mr Warren Bennett diagnosed Paul with nasal polyps, which are noncancerous, sac-like growths on the lining of the nose or sinuses. Paul comments “When Mr Bennett showed me the CT scan, I could see my nose was full of polyps.” After Paul’s diagnosis, he had endoscopic surgery and his septum adjusted. “Mr Bennett explained everything professionally and really wanted to give the best treatment for my condition.”
Mr Warren Bennett recalls the treatment performed on Paul, “He had full endoscopic sinus surgery to clear the disease and nasal polyps from all his sinuses. Image-guidance technology was used during the operation to make the surgery as safe and accurate as possible. Paul was able to go home later that day.” comments Mr Bennett. “A week after the procedure, Paul came to the clinic for gentle cleaning of the nose (called debridement) using a 4k camera system. We hope Paul’s troublesome nasal problems will stay a thing of the past.”

“Now I can smell properly again! The surgery was worth it. After a week of feeling a bit sore and puffy, I was back to normal again,” says Paul, reflecting on the last few months since his surgery. “Having my smell return has been amazing. I’m smelling fragrances like coffee again. I’m looking forward to being able to smell the roast dinner this Christmas. I’m sleeping much better now, too. My quality of life has definitely improved.”
