Mr John Jeffery

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

MBBS BSc FRCS(Orth) PGDip(MEd)

I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Bristol. I believe that every young person should be given the opportunity to live an active lifestyle, free of pain, and to develop healthy habits that they continue into adulthood.

I have a specialist interest in sports and soft tissue knee conditions that affect children and adolescents. I have a particular interest in childhood ACL ruptures and am developing a region-wide referral network for the surgical treatment of ACL injuries in the growing child. I also am particularly interested in patellofemoral pain and instability and believe that no child should have to wait until they are an adult to have treatment for a disabling condition.

I treat all paediatric orthopaedic problems with a specialist interest in knee conditions from the simple to the complex. Children require a different approach to adults. Not only are there anatomical and physiological differences, but social and emotional differences, that vary with age and between individuals. I offer private consulting and surgery for 0-18-year-olds with conditions such as Patellofemoral instability/pain, cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures, meniscal pathology (tears, instability), knee pain and swelling, osteochondral/chondral defects/fractures, osteochondritis dissecans, rotational and alignment abnormalities, and limb length inequality.

Treatments I offer include arthroscopy, derotation osteotomy, discoid meniscus surgery, meniscal repair/meniscus surgery, osteochondritis dissecans surgery, patellofemoral stabilisation and tibial tubercle osteotomy.

I work as an NHS consultant in the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. This is the tertiary referral centre for the South West of England for complex and rare conditions and I am the children's knee specialist at this hospital. It is also the paediatric Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the South West and I therefore have extensive experience of treating all traumatic injuries of the paediatric musculoskeletal system.

Before coming to Bristol, I trained at Imperial College London and completed my postgraduate training on the Oxford Orthopaedic rotation.

Outside of work I remain a keen endurance athlete. I understand the resilience and the commitment it takes to perform at a high level, but also to recover from injury and surgery.
