Mr Daniel Fudulu

Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

MD, PhD, FRCS (C-Th)

I have trained in cardiac surgery for over 12 years and have been a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in Bristol for almost two years. My clinical practice focuses on state-of-the-art off-pump multi-arterial coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), mitral valve repair, aortic valve surgery (including minimal access approaches), and other complex valvular surgery. I combine precise, evidence-based surgical techniques with a tailored approach for each patient, and I am committed to delivering an excellent all-round experience through clear communication, high-quality surgical care, and attentive perioperative management.

I specialise in advanced coronary artery surgery, including off-pump (beating heart) surgery using multiple arterial grafts and anaortic techniques to reduce the risk of stroke. I undertook an international consultant level fellowship at Waikato Hospital, New Zealand, and observerships in Sydney, Australia, focused on advanced coronary artery bypass grafting, including anaortic off-pump multi-arterial techniques and complex valve surgery. Other areas of interest include mitral valve repair and complex valve surgery, including double or triple valve procedures (aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve surgery). A significant proportion of my practice also involves aortic valve surgery, including minimal access approaches, sometimes combined with other valve or CABG procedures.

I have performed over 500 open-heart operations across both my NHS and private practice, with excellent results. The majority of my practice is focused on complex patients with high operative risk. I am working to expand my experience further into minimally invasive CABG and mini-mitral valve surgery, and have visited several UK and international units to build this expertise.

In addition to my clinical role as a surgeon, which defines me, I am also an academic cardiac surgeon (Senior Lecturer in Adult Cardiac Surgery). This dual role allows me to critically appraise current evidence and make the right decisions for the patients I treat.

I was awarded a prestigious NIHR Clinical Academic Award (ACF and ACL) during my training, enabling me to pursue academic research alongside my surgical training. I have authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in high-impact journals. I am currently working towards achieving a chair (Professorship) in cardiac surgery. My research focuses on big data outcomes research and predictive analytics in cardiac surgery.
