My clinical interests in the NHS are reflected in the type of patients that I see at the Spire Hospital, with the addition of some patients with medical problems related to diving (SCUBA predominantly).
This stems from my service in the Royal Navy when I was a diving medicine doctor at the Institute of Naval Medicine and the Submarine Escape training tank.
My clinical interests are patent foramen ovale (especially in those who have had a stroke, diving illness and now migraine), novel interventions such as valve implantation (TAVI and pulmonary valves) and all forms of intervention for congenital heart disease.
I have done extensive research on pacing therapy, particularly for heart failure.
I am a proctor (clinical teacher) for St Jude Medical and AGA Medical for PFO closure and appendage occlusion and Medtronic for transcatheter valves, which involves travelling to other hospitals to help them set up their programmes for these techniques.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Mark Turner at Spire include:
Cardiology
Aortic valve stenosis with Dr Mark Turner
In this video, Dr Mark Turner, a Consultant Cardiologist, describes what an aortic valve stenosis is, what symptoms it typically presents with, and how it is diagnosed. Dr Turner also explains how different severities of the condition will dictate how he treats the condition.
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Bristol Hospital.
Consultant Cardiologist, Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Bristol
Now in my mid forties, I have a lovely wife, Michelle, and three super children, Heidi, Orla and Luke.
My hobbies therefore take second place, but I still enjoy offshore sailing and kayaking - both on the sea and to take part in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon - which I have now done four times. I did this most recently with our fantastic cardiac radiologist Dr Mark Hamilton, who is a tenacious and motivated kayaking partner as well as being a premier league cardiac radiologist (who also works at the Spire Hospital), and sometimes diving.
