Mr Murali Bhat

I am a renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon, with nearly three decades of specialised experience in orthopaedics and an overall 32 years in the medical field. Practising in the UK as a consultant for over 15 years, I am a prominent medical tertiary expert in the field of wrist and hand surgery. 

My clinical interests include, hand surgery, wrist surgery, acute hand and upper limb trauma, post-traumatic hand and wrist reconstruction, distal radius fracture surgery, tendon transfer surgery, chronic wrist pain, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis surgery, joint replacements, arthroscopic wrist surgery including triangular fibrocartilage complex surgery, dupuytren's surgery, sports injuries, carpal tunnel surgery, precision cortisone injection, joint fusion/arthrodesis, fractures, overuse injuries, dislocations, trigger finger surgery, repetitive strain injury, tendonitis, wrist pain, hand pain, elbow pain, shoulder pain, stiff joints, infections, musician's hand problems, wrist instability, tumour surgery, Tennis elbow and Golfer's elbow surgery, cubital tunnel surgery, ulnar nerve compression, elbow replacement, hammer toe correction, arthritis of the big toe, morton's neuroma, plantar fasciitis.

I am a consultant orthopaedic and upper limb surgeon at the Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust appointed in 2005. I am a trainer for specialist registrars, foundation trainees, trust doctors, undergraduates, GPs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, radiographers, orthopaedic practitioners and nurses. I am an examiner for doctors specialising to become hand surgeons. I am extensively trained both in the UK and Overseas. After qualifying in India, I did my initial post-graduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics (MS) from Bombay University, where I submitted my thesis on fractured wrists. My interest in hand and wrist surgery became clear and the desire to become a leading expert by training in the UK. 

I taught undergraduates in India for a period before I was deployed to the UK under the Overseas Doctors Training Scheme to refine my skills in hand and wrist surgery. I was trained in Northern Ireland, Nottingham and Portsmouth shaping into a highly competent and respected upper limb specialist. I did my hand surgery fellowship from Nottingham and shoulder surgery training in Portsmouth. I have, in collaboration with my early mentor, published several important papers, which have successfully help shape hand surgery around the world. 

I undertook research into the management of wrist injuries including distal radial fractures, scaphoid fractures and perilunate injuries. I also carried out research on frozen shoulder and surgery for arthritis of the hand and thumb. My current research interests are carpal tunnel syndrome, patient focused health care delivery systems such as virtual clinics and mistake proofing in healthcare. I aim to provide a comprehensive orthopaedic service with a special interest in hand and upper limb surgery.
