Mr Jan Luigi Marciniak

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Washington Hospital, where I provide specialist care for patients across Sunderland, Washington and the wider North East. I focus on helping people return to comfortable, active lives by treating conditions affecting the hip and knee.

I grew up in Middlesbrough and studied Medicine at the University of Sheffield. During my studies, I was awarded a pre-clinical distinction prize and graduated with Honours in 2006. I then completed my higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery on the Yorkshire Training Programme.

To further develop my expertise, I undertook two specialist fellowships at internationally recognised centres: the Charnley Hip and Knee Unit in Wrightington and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. These experiences enabled me to gain advanced skills in both hip and knee surgery.

In 2018, I was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, a role I continue alongside my private practice at Spire Washington Hospital.

I specialise in hip and knee replacement surgery, including complex and revision procedures, which involve improving or replacing previous joint operations. My practice also includes keyhole (arthroscopic) knee surgery, a minimally invasive technique used to diagnose and treat joint problems, as well as joint injections to help manage pain.

Where appropriate, I offer minimally invasive (small scar) techniques and day case hip and knee replacement surgery. These approaches are designed to support recovery and help patients return home as quickly as possible.
