I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1994. I did house jobs in Edinburgh before moving to Newcastle for SHO jobs. I gained a place on the Northern Region Specialist Registrar Training programme gaining successful CCST and entry on the Specialist Register in 2004. I spent two years in research with Prof Mike Bramble looking at the delays in the diagnosis of upper GI cancer and was awarded my MD from Edinburgh University.
Current areas of particular interest are endoscopy (currently Endoscopy Lead at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust which delivers trans-nasal endoscopy, Bowelscope and BCSP) and capsule endoscopy – providing the most comprehensive capsule service in the North East. I also currently provide the regional Double balloon enteroscopy service.
I have a keen interest in training and am faculty on the European Lumley Castle Capsule endoscopy course and co-course director of the national Trans-nasal endoscopy training course. I am training programme director for the Northern region (sitting on the SAC and BSG training committees). I am RCP regional advisor for training and on the Council of the RCP of Edinburgh. In addition I am a JAG endoscopy unit assessor. I am formally secretary of the BSG Small bowel and nutrition committee and currently chair of the UK capsule endoscopy users’ group. I am co-ordinating he development of the certification pathway for capsule endoscopy and am a member of the JAG training working group. I am co-authoring the ESGE technical review of capsule and device-assisted endoscopy as well as the ESGE quality indicators for capsule endoscopy. I have authored / co-authored several peer reviewed publications.
Spire Washington Hospital is only able to provide Covid-19 tests to patients undergoing surgery at our hospital. Covid-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service.
