Cardiology services at Spire Thames Valley Hospital

At Spire Thames Valley Hospital we offer a diagnostic and investigative one-stop Cardiac Clinic. This consultant led clinic is made up of expert cardiologists and specialist nurses. It offers a comprehensive cardiology service to patients with heart problems including:

  • Heart failure clinic
  • Rapid access clinic
  • Arrhythmia clinic
  • Cardio risk factor management clinic

Depending on the specific complaint, patients will be given a range of tests. These may include ECG (electrocardiogram), echocardiogram, exercise tolerance tests, 24 hour blood pressure monitoring, and blood tests.

Patients can usually be seen within 48 hours of referral and each patient is assessed and diagnosed by their consultant, who personally discusses any test results with them the same day.

Consultant cardiologist Dr Mohammed Al-Obaidi talks about the cardiology services available at Spire Thames Valley Hospital and his work there:

"Cardiology is one of the specilities at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. It is the only private hospital in the area to have a full service cardiology unit, which can provide cardiac pacemaker implantation. I have been a consultant cardiologist there since 2006 and have been implanting those devices since 2008. I believe these devices transformed lives of many patients who otherwise were previously at risk from collapsing and blackouts.

"In addition I provide other services at the hospital, including: transosophageal ECHO (TOE) procedures, which are more advanced ECHO procedures that give clearer pictures of the heart; DC cardioversion, which restores to normal heart rhythm abnormalities; and implantation of 'loop recorders', which are tiny recording machines which help continuous (24/7 up to 3 years) monitoring of the heart to investigate unexplaines episodes of palpatations or dizzy spells.

"I also run regular general cardiology out-patient clinics as well as special clinics for patients fitted with pacemakers for the purpose of interrogating the devices.

"Set in secluded grounds, Spire Thames Valley Hospital located near Gerrards Cross offers both adults and children treatments accross a wide range of specialities including ophthalmology, orthopaedics, urology, ear, nose and throat and cardiology.

"During their stay at Spire Thames Valley Hospital, all patients can expect private en-suite facilities and an excellent level of nursing care from a hospital which has more than 25 years' experience.

"Younger patients will be cared for by specially trained paediatric nursing team who are on hand to ensure that both the patients and their family's experience is relaxed and comfortable.

"Located in the heart of Windsor, the Spire Windsor Clinic offers patients a convenient second location for their outpatient appointments and any imaging diagnostics which they may need.

"The Spire Windsor Clinic houses an open MRI scanner. Open MRI Scanning can be a great comfort to patients who suffer from anxiety and claustrophobia and who often find it difficult to be scanned in the more commonly used tunnel shaped MRI scanners."
