CQC maintains Spire Thames Valley Hospital rating as 'Good'

03 February 2020

Slough-based Spire Thames Valley Hospital has maintained its ‘Good’ rating following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the two-storey hospital, which treats patients from across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Middlesex, during an unannounced visit in November.

The regulatory body rated the hospital across five key areas examining whether services were safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led. The hospital received ratings of ‘Good’ across all areas, an improvement on the CQC’s previous inspection findings from 2016, when it rated the hospital as ‘requires improvement’ on safety.

Spire Thames Valley, which carries out private work as well as activity on behalf of the NHS, has 37 private ensuite rooms providing in and outpatient care. Current facilities include: nine consulting rooms, two pre-assessment rooms, two operating theatres, one minor procedure treatment room, and a physiotherapy gym and treatment room.

The inspection report highlighted that the hospital planned care to meet the needs of local people as well as taking account of patients’ individual requirements, making it easy for people to give feedback. People could also access the service when they needed it and did not have to wait too long for treatment. The CQC reported that feedback from patients was positive about their care and treatment.

Staff were praised for being extremely motivated to deliver care that was kind and compassionate, demonstrating a genuine desire to enhance patients’ experience, and to ensure their needs were met and exceeded.

Hospital leadership was acknowledged for running services well and supporting staff to develop their skills, promoting a positive culture around the hospital.

Alison Dickinson, Group Clinical Director, said: “We are very pleased to maintain our ‘Good’ overall rating and delighted that our improvements and investment have been reflected in a ‘Good’ rating for safety. The rating is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of our hospital teams.”
