MD MS FRCS FACS
"A looking-forward and thriving workplace, where enthusiastic commitment, clinical effectiveness and lateral-thinking are taken very seriously."
I have been a Consultant Surgeon for 20 years and have a strong academic background with focus on clinical research and medical education. I have completed a postgraduate training in gastrointestinal surgery and attended international academic and teaching centres to subspecialise in cancer surgery and in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. I was awarded the Freedom of the City of London for my clinical results in colorectal and laparoscopic surgery.
My main fields of clinical interest are malignant and benign diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases, diverticular disease, proctologic disorders, upper gastrointestinal cancers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and hiatus hernia, abdominal wall hernias. I routinely take care of patients referred for anorectal bleeding, change in bowel habits, constipation, surgical anaemia, acid and non-acid reflux, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, anal pain, abdominal and inguinal hernias.
To date I have performed more than 10,000 surgical operations (mainly colorectal, upper GI and hepatobiliary surgery) - most of them by the laparoscopic approach, both in elective and in emergency patients. I have also performed over 2,000 diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies (gastroscopies and colonoscopies).
After many years of being a Visiting Professor of Human Anatomy in Rome, I am the clinical and educational supervisor of junior doctors and an honorary clinical tutor for the University of Edinburgh and the University of Rome.
In addition to my clinical work, I have a number of activities related to public health, medical leadership and education.
