Mr Richard Imonikhe

Consultant Ophthalmologist, Glaucoma and Cataract Surgeon

FRCOphth, CCST, MSc, BEng, MBBS, ARSM

I have been an ophthalmologist for over 15 years, with a special interest in glaucoma, cataract surgery, and laser eye treatments. I regularly perform larger and complex surgeries including preserflo, trabeculectomy and aqueous shunt insertions and also minimally invasive options such as istents, hydrus shunts and ELIOS laser.

I specialise in cataract surgery, including the use of premium lens implants to optimise visual outcomes. I also diagnose and manage all forms of glaucoma, from ocular hypertension to complex and advanced cases. My expertise includes laser treatments such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and micro-pulse laser, as well as minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) like iStent and PreserFlo.

For advanced glaucoma, I perform aqueous shunt procedures using devices such as the Ahmed valve and Paul tube. I also manage dry eye disease, particularly in the context of long-term glaucoma treatment, where preservative-containing drops can impact the ocular surface. My approach combines effective disease control with personalised strategies to preserve comfort and quality of vision.

I trained in London at the Western Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, where I also completed a glaucoma fellowship. Now Glaucoma Lead at University Hospital Southampton, I offer advanced, personalised care with a focus on drop-free glaucoma treatments and minimally invasive surgical options.

I was raised and schooled in Southampton, and I'm proud to now care for the community I grew up in. Before studying medicine, I completed a BEng in Medical Engineering and an MSc in Engineering in Medicine, with research focused on bioactive glasses. I was drawn into medicine by a desire to apply my understanding of technology and biomedical science directly to patient care.
