Hip pain is most commonly caused by osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis in the UK. Other, more rare causes include:

  • Hip dysplasia – the hip is the wrong shape or the socket is in an incorrect position to support the leg bone.
  • Hip fracture – where injury causes sudden hip pain.
  • Femoroacetabular impingement – where the bones of the hip rub together because they are abnormally shaped.
  • Hip labral tear – a tear in the ring of cartilage around the hip joint socket.
  • Infection of the hip joint or bones – including septic arthritis or osteomyelitis.
  • Osteonecrosis - reduced blood flow in the hip joint which causes the bone to break down.
  • Bursitis – inflammation and swelling in the bursa (fluid-filled sac) over your hip joint.
  • Hamstring injury
  • Inflamed thigh ligament – a condition often caused by strain when running
