How to make a referral

At Spire Portsmouth Hospital we are committed to working with all our local healthcare professionals, providing support and information for you and your practice. 

Our Primary Care Liaison team will work closely with you, to help provide the highest level of service – Making a positive difference to our patients’ lives through outstanding personalised care is at the heart of everything we do.

Online referrals

Spire Connect

Spire Connect is the quickest way to make a referral. The patient e-referral portal offers a fast, easy and fully secure way for GPs, practice staff and healthcare professionals to refer patients to Spire hospitals. As well as making secure online referrals for a broad range of treatments and tests and scans, you can also:

  • Receive email confirmations – once your referral is submitted and processed
  • Access sent referral information – at any time
  • Find direct up to date contact information
  • Save time and paper – it’s environmentally friendly

You can also refer your private patients to us by emailing your referrals to: Spire.portsmouth-gpreferrals@nhs.net.

Alternatively, you can refer your private patients via telephone, by calling us on: 02392 456172.

Private insured patients

A referral letter is generally required from you before any insured patient can be seen by a consultant. Patients can call our bookings team on 02392 456 155 to arrange a convenient appointment.

  • Use Spire Connect to refer your patient. All patients using private insurance will need a referral letter
  • Our team will contact your patient to discuss consultants, times and dates
  • Your patient needs to contact their insurer to make sure they are covered for their appointment to see their chosen consultant
  • We’ll update you on your patients’ progress

Self-funding patients

Self-funding patients are able to be seen by a consultant without a GP referral, although a letter is often preferred.

  1. Use Spire Connect to upload the referral letter. Call 02392 456 087 if you have any queries
  2. Our team will contact your patient to discuss consultants, dates, times and pricing
  3. We’ll update you on your patients’ progress

NHS referrals

Spire Portsmouth Hospital provides a range of elective surgical services to NHS patients – full details of the services offered can be found on the NHS e-Referral system (www.ebs.ncrs.nhs.uk).

Our aim is to make the referral process as quick and easy as possible. Please use the NHS e-Referral system to refer your patients to us. We are no longer able to accept referral letters from primary care by any other means (eg fax or email).
