MB ChB, FRCP, PhD
I am Professor Chauhan, and I specialise in helping people with breathing problems. I work as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Portsmouth Hospitals and the Isle of Wight NHS Trusts, where I also serve as Chief Research Officer.
I help patients who have trouble breathing, especially those with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Many of my patients come to me when they have been coughing for a long time or feel breathless, but doctors haven't been able to find out why.
I also started the Portsmouth Severe Asthma Service, where we treat people with the most serious types of asthma. That clinic can offer my patients the newest treatments, including special injections called biologic therapies that can really help severe asthma.
I love doing research to find better ways to help my patients. Over the years, I have helped increase the number of patients taking part in medical studies at Portsmouth Hospitals from 1,000 in 2008 to near 17,000 in 2025. This makes Portsmouth one of the leading hospitals in the country for respiratory medical research. I believe every patient should have the opportunity to participate in, and benefit from medical research.
Right now, I am studying new biologic treatments for asthma, new technologies for diagnosing respiratory conditions among many other topics. I also lead the Portsmouth Technology Trials Unit, where I work with companies to test new medical devices that could help people with breathing problems.
In 2021, I was given an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen for my work in respiratory medicine. This was a great honour that recognised my contribution to helping people with breathing problems.
I was also named Clinical Leader of the Year at the HSJ Awards in 2019. The judges liked how I bring different people together - patients, doctors, and companies - to solve problems in the NHS.
I have an MB ChB medical degree, I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), and I have a PhD. I did my PhD research as a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow, which taught me how to do high-quality medical research.
I am also an Honorary Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Portsmouth and supervise and teach researchers. I am also the Senior Responsible Officer for Undergraduate Medical Education in Portsmouth and Isle of Wight. This means I help train the next generation of doctors and researchers.
I helped create the Wessex Severe Asthma Network, which brings together doctors from Portsmouth and Southampton to share knowledge and help more patients. I also work with the Wessex Health innovation Network to make sure good research, and innovation happens across the region.
I also co-founded a social enterprise called Respiaction, which works to improve the health of people with breathing problems through research and education.
I believe in taking time to really understand each patient's problems. Many people with breathing difficulties have been to lots of doctors without getting answers. I use the latest tests and treatments to find out what's wrong and create a treatment plan that works for each person.
I also think research is very important. By taking part in studies, my patients can access new treatments that might not be available anywhere else. Everything I do is focused on helping people breathe better and live healthier lives.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Anoop Chauhan at Spire include:
Respiratory medicine
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.
My recent research has been on the indoor environment in asthma in studies of children, adolescents and adults with asthma. I am also undertaking novel randomised-controlled studies of modern allergen free healthy homes in allergic asthma, and new injectable biological therapies in patients with severe asthma.
Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust
When I'm not working, I enjoy playing cricket. I still play competitively in the Hampshire Cricket League. Sport is important to me because I understand how breathing problems can stop people from being active.
I am passionate about helping people with breathing problems, and I use both my clinical skills and research knowledge to give my patients the best possible care.
