Mr Michael Tappin
MBChB FRCS (Ed)
I offer the full range of vision correction procedures as well as laser cataract surgery, a minimally invasive procedure performed using a newly developed state-of-the-art laser which eliminates the use of a blade. I also perform the new Sulcoflex DUET Lens Exchange – an adjustable solution to correct vision at all distance and the first to offer lifelong reversibility
My main surgical interests include cornea, cataract, anterior segment, refractive laser and lens surgery. I trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London before undertaking fellowships in corneal and refractive surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia.
In 2005 I became the first surgeon in the UK to perform endothelial cell transplantation now known as DMEK. The pioneering technique is less invasive surgery to treat Fuchs dystrophy and endothelial cell failure. I also recently published a new surgical technique for the treatment of pterygium.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Michael Tappin at Spire include:
Laser eye surgery (LASEK, LASIK, Photo-Therapeutic Keratectomy), Sulcoflex DUET lens exchange, Implantable contact lens, premium lens implant; KAMRA vision, Pterygium removal, corneal transplantation (DMEK, DSAEK, DALK, PK), corneal infections, corneal collagen cross-linking, INTACs, corneal dystrophies, Presbyopia correction, recurrent corneal erosion syndrome, YAG Capsulotomy, SLT laser for glaucoma.
