Dr Richard Jones
FRCP MBBS MSc
I have worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire area for the last 20 years. I am a general cardiologist with an interest in echocardiography and clinical leadership. About half of my professional life is dedicated to trying to improve clinical care delivery.
I studied medicine at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, which proved to be a most enjoyable and stimulating experience. My first house job was for the Professor of Surgery at that hospital, as well as an attachment to the cardiothoracic unit where my deeper interest in cardiology was first stimulated. Following general medical training in the West Country, I went on to become a research fellow at the University Hospital of Wales in my hometown of Cardiff. I spent two years specialising in heart scanning (echocardiography) with particular reference to disease of the Mitral Valve. After this I joined the Wessex Specialist Training scheme, during which I worked in Jersey, Portsmouth and the Wessex Cardiac Unit at Southampton.
I have held the leadership roles of Clinical Director of Cardiology for Portsmouth, Chief of Medicine for the NHS in Portsmouth and Clinical Director of the Wessex Cardiovascular Network. I am currently Associate Medical Director at Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust and Clinical lead for elective care transformation for the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Integrated Care Partnership. I regularly lecture on human factors and sit on the hospital safety group.
Work-life balance is vital for a sustained and enthusiastic clinical career. I enjoy photography, sailing, walking and red wine. All of the landscape photographs at the Spire Hospital Portsmouth are my work.
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.
